Whether you have many country acres or a suburban backyard getting back to nature and keeping your own chickens has grown in popularity over the last few years!
Keeping chickens in your backyard can be a great way for families to come together, teach young children about food, responsibility, and the environment. If you want to start keeping chickens, look no further than our new Intro to Backyard Chicken Keeping course! This course will take you through the steps, equipment, time, and money needed to be successful in raising your own layer hens. You will learn about all the different types of laying chickens available, what color eggs they produce, what structures are needed and what you can expect! Chickens can also be a great feature to your gardens as a form of integrated pest management.
August 15 – Starting a flock – things to consider, breed characteristics (Different breeds will be brought to class to discuss).
Sept: 12th – Proper Housing and Enclosures of the flock
Oct. 17th – Care and Feeding – predators, health issues and how to prevent diseases
November 21st – How to maintain the flock over the winter and continuing egg production: General review
Classes will be held from 6:00pm-7:30pm in the main room of the Baltimore County Agricultural Center located at 1114 Shawan Road, Cockeysville, MD 21030
